Michel Bettane

While teaching ancient Greek and Latin to university students back in 1977, Michel Bettane enrolled wine courses at the « Academie du Vin » in Paris for his own pleasure. With exceptional tasting ability and memory, Michel quickly ranked amongst the best students of his group and was offered by wine experts Steven Spurrier and Michel Dovaz to act as a teacher amongst his own peers at the same academy a year later. In the early 1980s, Michel began his journalistic career as Chief Editor at La Revue du vin de France, where he would meet several years later Thierry Desseauve during one of the famous auctions held at the Hospices de Beaune. Work relationship led to friendship, and collaboration led to association yielding to the publication of the first edition of «Le Classement des Vins de France par Bettane et Desseauve» in 1995. Immediate acclaim was received for this publication from both winemakers and consumers alike whom were long hoping for a new methodology in wine criticism. Michel Bettane is today widely considered as one of the World’s most talented wine taster, and as a living encyclopedia filled with pages of human interactions with the winemakers composing the complex patchwork of France’s vine growing regions…

Thierry Desseauve

From an early age, Thierry Desseauve developed two passions: Medias and wine… Creator of a rock magazine during his high school times in Rouen, Thierry and his friends rapidly developed an appreciation for articles writing, advertisements selling techniques, and publication and distribution options for their “rocking” paper to be sold to their fellow students at the school doors or in concert halls… Aside from a vivid interest in musical medias, Thierry inherited a particular interest for wine from his father and forged his first tasting experiences while “borrowing” some of his dad’s finest bottles in the family cellar.
Freshly graduated from National School of Journalism, Thierry decided to combine his two passions and became Executive Editor of La Revue du vin de France in 1989. With triple digits increase of distribution within 15 years, the magazine became the reference for readers seeking both for celebrated wine estate names as well as unknown and freshly discovered wine gems. Awarded with the “Edmond de Rothschild” prize in 1998 for his “Le Livre du Vin”, Thierry Desseauve partnered with Michel Bettane in 1995 to launch the first edition of their «Le Classement des Vins de France par Bettane et Desseauve». This new wine publication aiming to inform wine lovers and professionals via very precise rating and ranking of over 50.000 French wines then became, and remains today, the reference amongst yearly French wine guides…
